PMUY, launched in 2016, aimed to provide free LPG connections to women from below-poverty-line households, thereby reducing dependence on traditional biomass fuels. The study highlights how access to clean cooking fuel has improved health outcomes, reduced drudgery, and enhanced the dignity of rural women. It also examines challenges such as affordability of refills, sustained usage, and awareness gaps that limit the scheme’s long-term effectiveness. By analyzing field data and administrative perspectives, the paper underscores the transformative potential of PMUY in empowering women and advancing rural development, while calling for policy refinements to ensure inclusivity and sustainability Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched by the government of India in 2016 in the form of a social movement.
